Transportation of bulk

The company conveys a broad spectrum of general and bulk cargoes along the international and inland routes: metal and metal products, construction goods, fertilizers, grain crops, containerized cargo and a number of other unique goods as ship consignments from 1500 to 7000 tons. The shipping company vessels make more than 2500 calls at 300 foreign ports of 30 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa within a year.

Much of the traffic of the shipping company is effected under long-term contracts. The availability of versatile fleet, depending on the task, makes it possible to offer to a client both a one-time shipment and transportation on the basis of long-term contracts with regard for the specificity of cargo, loading and unloading capacities, local conditions of navigation and characteristics of ports.

The impeccable reputation and high quality of the company’s work is evidenced by the fact that the company has been working with a great a number of freight owners for more than one decade. The long-term contracts with the volume of transportation of several hundred thousand tons per year, performed by the shipping company for its major customers, may be extended by several times with minimal effort, if the freight owner has such need. If necessary, the company may build new vessels for long-term contracts.

Bulk Cargo Classification

The category of bulk includes cargoes that do not have a separate package, with dimensions of individual fractions varying from dust to 13 mm, and also from 0.05-100 mm, but on condition that particles up to 13 mm prevail in the total volume (their share is more than 50%). They have free flowability, so they pour out without the use of additional special equipment. Also, unlike bulk cargoes, they are allowed to be placed in containers during transportation (for example, barrels, special containers, etc.).

Bulk cargoes are divided into 3 main categories:
  • Food - grain, sugar, flour, salt and so on. Their transportation is carried out only in closed transport, providing effective protection against external influences.
  • Industrial, which do not require protection from precipitation - peat, sand, coal and much more.
  • Industrial requiring protection from precipitation - cement, gypsum, etc.

The main task in the transportation of bulk cargo is to prevent rash, because it can lead not only to direct material and economical costs as a result of loss, but also to environmental pollution due to the dispersion of harmful materials. Therefore, there are a number of generally accepted rules that need to be considered when organizing delivery:

  • Cargo with a light and medium bulk density may be placed with a cap (above the sides). But in this case, before transporting, the “cap” profile should be well formed and covered with a special canopy or tarpaulin to prevent blowing and shedding.
  • The surface of the bulk material should not be higher than the strapping belt beads of rolling stock.
  • There are other requirements, but they are individual for each type of bulk cargo - i.e. are formed depending on its specific properties. For example, transportation of flammable materials is carried out in a specially equipped vehicle, subject to the speed regime in a certain range.
